Today I learned that William "The Refrigerator" Perry is in the hospital. This makes me a bit sad because I am a lifelong Bears fan. He is a larger-than-life character and I hope he gets better soon. Since today is Earth Day, I thought I'd share my Top Five ways that the Fridge is worthy of Earth Day recognition...
Reason #1: Gravitational Pull
The dude is a big ol' mass of flesh. His pull was great and he impacted the game of football. Earth has a pretty good pull, but only has one moon. I think of the Fridge as more of a Jupiter kinda guy...
Reason #2: Four Seasons
The Fridge has had quite the career: Football Player, WWE Wrestler, Brick Layer, GI Joe Action Figure. Each one of his "season" had its own climate and impact on life. Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call...the Fridge will keep circling around for a paycheck...
Reason #3: Topographic Abnormalities
That gap between his teeth is amazing. I would also say that his "carpenter's crack" would rival the deepest canyons of the Earth.
Reason #4: Casting a Shadow
So my only beef with Super Bowl XX (other than the sucky competition) is that Sweetness (#34, Walter Payton) did not get a touch down. There was a short distance situation and da Bears decided to give the ball to #72 to bound (or roll) into he end zone. Enough with the gimmicks...we know that guy is large, but you shoulda given Sweetness the damn ball.
Reason #5: Sound Track
While a YouTube video search for "earth day" yields a bunch of hippy-dippy crap, there is no mistaking the searchability of the Super Bowl Shuffle. The Fridge in on the front lines singin' and dancin' and shufflein' to the dope beat.
So in honor of Fridge Day (formerly known as Earth Day) I bring you The Super Bowl Shuffle...
McMahon, Payton, Perry and the rest of the 1986 Bears were the first NFL team that I can remember following as a kid. As the years progressed, I turned to the "dark side" and became a Raiders fan somewhere along the line. But deep down, I still remember the man they called "The Fridge" rolling into the endzone and spiking the ball with the force of a pound of C4, it was magical. Get well soon, William!
